RECOGNIZING AND AVOIDING
THE DRUNK DRIVER
Far too often our firm’s clients come to us following being injured in a car collision with a drunk driver. A Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Gallop poll revealed that citizens believe that drunk drivers are our Nation’s number one safety problem on the highways. If you find yourself in front of a drunk driver, turn right at the nearest intersection and let him/her pass. If you are behind a drunk driver, slow down and keep a very safe distance. If a drunk driver is coming at you, slow down and pull over to the right shoulder and stop.
Drunk drivers display any number of the following driving characteristics:
- Making wide turns.
- Weaving, swerving, drifting or straddling the center line.
- Almost striking a vehicle or object.
- Driving on the wrong side of the road.
- Driving at a very slow speed.
- Stopping without cause.
- Braking erratically.
- Responding slowly to traffic signals.
- Turning abruptly or illegally.
- Driving after dark with headlights off.
The foregoing list was obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
